The updated G-Class has said farewell to its austere roots to transform into an executive on-road comfort van while maintaining the simple and distinctive exterior design as well as the superb off-road performance.
The Mercedes-Benz Gelandewagen or G-Class has become an integral part of the Austrian auto-maker’s legendary line-up. 33-years from its original inception, a reborn G-Class has made its debut in South Africa in the Valley of a Thousand Hills in Zululand. Four different versions of the 2013 Mercedes G-Class have just been launched, all forming flagship models for all other Mercedes SUV’s.

The exterior has been updated slightly to keep it looking fresh with new LED daytime running lights, as well as new mirrors. The cream of the crop G63 AMG also features a new grille, red brake callipers and 20-inch wheels.
The G-Class’ interior features are enhanced by a redesigned instrument cluster and centre console. The instrument panel now features an integrated TFT colour screen that forms part of the Command Online infotainment system. This system includes internet access, sat-nav, Linguatronic voice-control and Bluetooth connectivity.
Within the G-Class there are 3 new engine variants in the five-door long-wheelbase formation. There is the G350 BlueTEC, G500, and G63 AMG. The basic model – the G350 – has a V6 turbodiesel engine capable of producing 155kW power and 540Nm of torque. The 5.5-litre V8 in the G500 churns out 285kW and 530Nm, while the twin-turbo V8 in the G500 delivers a whopping 400Kw of growling power and 760Nm of torque. These powerful engines are complimented by state of the art technology and safety features.
Standard equipment appointments in the G-Class include features like the Blind Spot Assist and the Parktronic parking assist system as well as the 7G-Tronic Plus automatic transmission, while the optional extras range from a reversing camera to Disctronic Plus adaptive cruise control.
