Subaru BRZ Finally in SA

05 Nov 2012

The BRZ will also be Subaru’s first rear-wheel drive vehicle to be offered in South Africa, which is fitting since the BRZ is marketed as a true sports car.
After months of waiting, South African BRZ fans will finally get their fix. Since its February release in Japan, when sales outstripped predictions by four-to-one, local BRZ enthusiasts have had to wait patiently while Subaru adjusted its export plans and dates.
Subaru South Africa has already started local testing with the BRZ to determine altitude performance and fuel functionality. When local engineers have completed this testing, more detailed specifications as well as pricing will be made available. The BRZ will be available in the trademark World Rally Blue Mica bespoke colour, which currently makes up one third of all sales in the Japanese market.
Subaru has been developing the BRZ in conjunction with Toyota’s 86 team. This has resulted in Subaru contributing the 2.0-litre 4-cylinder normally aspirated Boxer engine. The engine delivers 147Kw and 205Nm of torque and is mated to a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission. The BRZ will also be Subaru’s first rear-wheel drive vehicle to be offered in South Africa, which is fitting since the BRZ is marketed as a true sports car. According to Subaru South Africa’s marketing team leader Ashley Lazarus “stability and balance have always been core Subaru values” and promises there “will be plenty in the BRZ”. The BRZ boasts firmer suspension than the Toyota 86, in order to provide snappy and precise handling. Subaru engineers designed the BRZ to have a distinct feel and be as at home around a track as it is around city streets.
Standard specs on the European models include: 17-inch alloy rims, 19-inch front brake discs, torque-sensing limited slip diff, cruise control, paddle shifts for the auto gearbox, dual air-con, six-speaker audio system with iPod connectivity, front fog lights, smart entry and stop/start functionality as well as leather covering on the steering wheel, parking brake lever and the gear shifter.
